Dhotrey is located at an altitude of 8,500ft. It takes about 2.5 hours to reach Dhotrey from Darjeeling by car. Your trek will start from here through a deep forest and beautiful rhododendron trees welcome you to enter into next place called Tonglu. The Distance from Dhotrey to Tonglu is 6 kms. Tonglu is located at an altitude of 10,130ft. On a clear day, you get magnificent views of Kanchenjunga snow peaks from Tonglu. And if the sky is clear blue, you can even see Mt. Everest. Early wake-up for a sunrise view from Tumling Top. Weather permitting you will get fabulous views of both Singalila and Chola ranges and of Mount Kanchenjunga. I booked the 2 day trek to Tonglu and Tumling via the Ashmita website. I was traveling on my own and looking to make last-minute plans that involved trekking, landscape photography, and seeing the outdoors. During the online booking process, which was very easy and straightforward, the Ashmita staff were highly professional and very attentive/responsive to my email queries. My guide was Sangay, who was perhaps the most thoughtful, kind, generous, and professional guide I have ever met. He is also a wonderful person with a rich knowledge of Darjeeling and the mountains, awesome hiking/mountain stories, and a warm sense of humor. He has significant experience as a guide and mountaineer and has excellent English language and people skills. We became friends instantly! I intend to keep in touch with him into the future!
I recommend Ashmita MOST HIGHLY to anyone looking to book a guided trek in the Darjeeling region.
I myself intend to return for a second visit, and I plan to book my next trek through Ashmita.

Great trek. The first day we encountered quite heavy snowfall and we found the going quite tough but our experienced guide Sangay was fantastic and as well as being very knowledgable about the ground we covered was good humoured and patient throughout and made sure we stopped a couple of times for tea along the way. A lunch stop in a lodge en route was also included. The overnight was in Tumling at a lodge where there was a warming fire and rooms were sparse but clean and hot water bottles were provided (as the rooms had no heating).
We were up early in the morning to go and see sunrise on a day when the weather changed totally and we had clear blue skies and perfect views of Mount Kanchenjunga and Everest in the distance. After spending more time trekking up to Tonglu for further panoramic views we trekked a further seven km back downhill to meet the van to take us back. Driver was also good and vehicle was in excellent condition with working seat belts.
Communication with office beforehand was also very good and prompt to respond to our questions.
Organisation struck as very professional and have no hesitation in recommending them and especially if you are able to have Sangay as your guide.

Just back from India which included about 10 days in Darjeeling. A highlight was a dawn trip to Tiger Hill and trek back to Darjeeling followed the next day by a 2 day trek with a stayover in Tumling. Ashmita are a really professional and friendly outfit and our guides (Dawa Lama and Tenzing) were superb. Hope to go back for a 5 day trek next time.

Top notch guys at Ashmita. Starting from my first interaction with Subhas - the very hands on owner and head of this company. He was very flexible in customizing a 2 day solo trek on the Sandakhphu trail in the region. He is an experienced trekker and climber in the region. Upon my arrival in Darjeeling I was very warmly welcomed by him personally at his office. He breifed me about the trip and assigned a guide. The local guide, Mr. Gopu arrived very punctually as promised at 9 am at my hotel from where we left by car arranged for by Ashmita to the starting point at Manebhanjang. Mr. Gopu was extremely courteous, respectful and knowledgeable. While walking he ensured of my safety and comfort at all times and was able to engage in conversation in trying to get to know me personally. The stops along the trail were well timed along the way with 'chai' and biscuits, lunch etc. We arrived at Tumling around 4 pm at Shikhar lodge - a homestay where we were to be put up - separate review of that. Ashmita hosts all their groups overnight at this lodge which is the best of 3 lodges in the hamlet. The next day we were all woken up at 5.30 am for a short walk to take in a sunrise view of the Kanchenjunga peak-unfortunately it was foggy and overcast. Since I had disclosed to Gopu of my intent to use this trek as a preparatory one for a tougher trek in the summer, he took me halfway on the trail to juabari to a higher altitude and then led me back down through Tonglu and Dhotrey where a car was waiting on arrival to drop me back to the hotel. All in all everything was executed flawlessly. I have returned feeling refreshed armed with useful tips given by my personal guide Gopu for my bigger trek in the summer. I would highly recommend him as well as the entire team at Ashmita. If you are thinking of hiking in the Darjeeling region - shut your eyes and contact Subhas at Ashmita. You will be amazed beyond expectation.
Thank you Subhas and team for a very memorable 2 days.
My sister and I booked a trek with Ashmita during monsoon season in late June. This was a low-altitude trek through Darjeeling, Tumling, and surrounding areas. It was an excellent experience. Subash was very responsive and went out of his way to make sure our tour went smoothly. And our guide, Pemba, was extraordinary. He anticipated our every need and beyond, and he was knowledgeable, gentle, welcoming, and kind. 5 stars, must book!

I booked a 2 day trek via email a couple of months ago. Subash took lots of time to work out a suitable itinerary with me and then supported me through getting the right kit and paying. He was always flexible, knowledgeable and understanding.
Our guide, Sangay, was just superb! Hugely experienced (he's been on some serious expeditions), he went the extra mile in tailoring our experience as we went, looking out for our limits but meeting both my teenage son's requirements to be stretched and mine to see as much flora and fauna as possible too. He looked after us at every stop ensuring our lodging, food and tea's were perfect. He was truly pleasurable company and added to our enjoyment. Best of all, he woke us at 5 this morning (as agreed, if the weather had changed and the clouds parted) to see views of the sleeping Buddha and Everest.
Trekking in monsoon was a great experience for us. Hardly another soul and ever changing weather. We were blessed with rain only while we slept

Subash organised a 2-day trek for us along the Singalila Ridge, part walking, part Land Rover, to see the sunrise over the Himalayas from Sandakphu. Our guide was excellent, always courteous and helpful, even offering to carry our sleeping bags as we only had day rucksacks with us. He was very knowledgable as well about the area and its flora and fauna. Hospitality at all our stops was good, although I would advise anyone doing this trek in the cooler months to make sure they've adequate warm clothing - the room we stayed in had no heating and the nighttime temperature was below freezing. Sleeping bags, blankets and hot water bottles are provided, but you will still probably need to keep all your available clothes on! The place was spotlessly clean, however, and the hot food provided was good and very welcome! Our sunrise view was not the best as there was quite a lot of mist, but it was still spectacular and the weather is not a trek organiser's responsibility! Overall an excellent trek and well organised. Thank you Subash.

It is difficult to know where to begin reviewing Ashmita Trek. In some respects I feel as though I need to leave two reviews - one for the experience of trekking to see the magnificent sunrise over the Kanchenjunga mountain range, and a second review for Subash, owner of Ashmita Trek and his wonderful team. Both would receive a 5 / 5 in every respect! I came across Ashmita Trek in the months leading up to my visit to India back in November 2015. Both myself and my travel buddy, Jim wanted to experience something of an adventure whilst away and we felt that a trek to see the Himalaya would be exactly the type of adventure we were looking for. Consistently excellent reviews persuaded us to contact Subash and see whether he could put us together a package for our time in Darjeeling. Subash was always quick to reply to the various emails passed back and forth in the months before the trip. Concerns surrounding the nature of the trek were addressed and very quickly we felt certain that we were in good hands and opted for a four day trek taking us from Darjeeling to Sandakphu. A small deposit was required to secure the trip and Subash took care of permits required for the trip once we had emailed a copy of our passports. Once we arrived in Darjeeling we decided that there was so much to see in the area, we would like to alter our itinerary to a shorter trek and we discussed this with Subash when he arrived at our hotel to collect final payment the evening before our trek. Subash was very quick to revise the plans and come up with an alternative two day trek to Tonglu followed by a full day sightseeing around Darjeeling. We left extremely satisfied and eager for the following day to begin.
Subash met us in the hotel reception for check-out the following morning where we encountered a small problem with the hotel credit card reader. Unable to pay using my card Subash kindly took care of the situation on behalf of the hotel and drove us to several ATM machines until we had cash for the hotel. Saving us the trouble of heading back to the hotel Subash ensured that the payment reached the hotel as we headed off in the Jeep with our Shurpa, Tshering. Furthermore Subash also took care of our large backpacks whilst we were away trekking and ensured they were waiting for us at our next hotel (which he also arranged for us). Once we had returned back in Darjeeling Subash even took care of buying tickets for the narrow gauge railway as well as helping us with our luggage from one hotel to the next. In short, Subash is not only a reliable and professional tour operator, but a kind, caring and passionate individual who we came to think an awful lot of.
The two day trek to Tonglu and back was without question the highlight of our trip. The previous year we visited the Grand Canyon and can honestly say that the scenery on this trek is many times more awe inspiring than anything I saw in the USA (as incredible as that was of course). The trek was extremely hard going for the first few hours as the path climbs steeply up and out of Maneybhanjang, situated at an altitude of around 2134 metres above sea level. Pretty soon Tshering announced that we were officially in Nepal and we continued the steep ascent toward Tumling. Neither myself not Jim can say enough good words about Tshering. He is a calm and patient shurpa who went to great lengths to ensure that we were comfortable and getting the most out of our trip. We enjoyed regular stops where we could simply stand and enjoy the scenery unfolding below us and the absolute silence. Despite being very tired it was impossible not to be in awe of the beautiful landscape and Tshering pointed out anything of interest, from the eagles soaring just above our heads to the daily routines of the people we passed that walk miles each day to collect firewood. We stopped at various homes and tea huts where we were treated to sweet masala chai and most notably a noodle broth which provided us a much needed energy boost. Remote Buddhist monasteries came and went as we continued our ascent to Tumling, which we reached at sunset. Our accommodation was a welcome sight and were relived to find a most comfortable room at the Shikhar Lodge. Having suffered with a little cramp earlier on in the day Tshering knocked on the door with a bucket of warm salt water which he massaged into my leg to help prevent cramp the following day. I have to say it definitely worked!! We enjoyed a fine home cooked meal with several other trekkers before Tshering handed us hot water bottles which we took back to our lodge and settled down for the night. We visited in November and although by no means freezing, the hot water bottles were much needed throughout the night. A knock on the door at 5am saw us lace up our boots once again for the short walk to Tumling top. Tshering and one other sherpa accompanied myself, Jim and another couple to the hill in time for the highlight of the trip - sunrise over the Kanchenjunga mountain range and of course, Everest. We were blessed with clear skies and a mist-free morning so our view was absolutely perfect. our sherpas left us and the four of us (plus Himalayan sheep dog) sat and watched the sun come up over India and Nepal. I shall never forget that moment and have Subash and Tshering to thank for getting us there and back safely. Ashmita are in a league of their own and this is down primarily to the professionalism and warmth shown by Subash and his team. I couldn't rate them highly enough and urge anybody considering an adventure to make contact with Ashmita Trek.

Subash and his team organised an amazing 3 day trek (60km's) for my wife and I this November. Our guide Mr Vinod was excellent, very professional and made our trip up to the Sunrise Lodge to watch the sunrise over the Himalayas a memory we will never forget. Thank you for such an amazing experience.

Subash put together a special 2-day trek for us to fit in with the time we had. First day we walked up through some memorable Buddhist monasteries. Stayed in a comfortable (and sufficiently warm, which is great given the freezing weather in November) guesthouse at the top, and were provided with good home made food. The sunrise from the hill nearby was stunning, one of my highlights of India. We could see Everest in the distance. Our guide Chenning(?) was helpful and chatted with us a bit, while also giving us our own space. On the second day he really picked up the pace though and went off ahead, often we couldn't see him and worried we'd take the wrong turning! We never quite did get lost though. Would have given them 5 stars except for the unusual guiding on the second day - maybe he wanted us to get into town in time for lunch, but that wasn't communicated if so.

To trek in Darj was my last minute decision , lack of gear and plan was solved once I met Subash, he helped me out to get my stuff in local store, and very cheap and nice trekking shoes in 900 rubees. I also had a very inflexible schedule and timing, Subash helped me to sort out and customized my personal trek with my guide Pemba.
As a single women traveling in India, I've been heard lots story from solo female travelers. Pemba was really nice, reliable guide who cared of my breath condition while we were trekking. If any female trekkers has any concern about trekking with male guide, Pemba is totally someone trust worthy.
I had two days trip to Tonglu, stay a night in Tumbling in a nicely guest house, it was fun to met other trekker there and made friends with everyone. Subash helped me out most of the things while I was in Darj, I enjoy times talk with him and had wonderful tea together

I used Ashmita during my trip to Darjeeling in December 2014 and I must say that I am really satisfied with the provided service.
Our trip included pickup/drop-off from airport, guided tour of Darjeeling area and a 2 day trek. Everything was professionally organised and we had a competent driver with us at all times. Subash also arranged for an excellent hotel with brilliant views. The trek was also very good with a very nice and helpful guide (unfortunately his English wasn't that great).
I would definitely recommend them and would like to try a longer trek

We didn't have lot of time so we decided to make a 2 days trek that Subash recommended us. The way up it happend to be too short but with nice views. We went up in less than 2h, we slept in Tumbling, nice place and food and amazing sightseeing in the sunrise. After breakfast we went down to Maneybhanjan after a 5h walk. Dawa, our guide, became a friend to us, he offered us so many times tea that did not need to drink water!
About the train it was a waste of time for us, as it follows the same road the cars do, and we have already made it by car twice and apart of the views there is nothing interesting about it.

We spent 3 days in Darjeeling with Subash, our guide, who showed us all the necesary things to have a global Himalaya experiencie. It was wonderful! Thank his knowledge about the region, the mountains, culture and relgions we could enjoy this marvellous place! Hiking in singalilia in the border of Nepal and India, visting the budist monasterys, eating with local families delicious meals and visiting Darjeeling and the tea factories. Best guide ever known that takes care everytime of their customers with kindness, Subash is now our friend! Thank you very much

My wife and I did a 2 day trek through Ashmita March 2014 and had a great time. We walked into the Ashmita office after reading reviews and Subash tailored our trip to our needs. We've been traveling India for over a month and had little in the way of appropriate gear / clothing. We also had limited time and couldn't do a 5 day trek as some recommend. Subash was very friendly and put together a great trip, and even gave us jackets. The trip was quite amazing, with an overnight in a village at 3000m. Food was wonderful, service was wonderful, and the views were quite amazing. I would highly recommend our guide Ajay as well. He was warm, professional, knowledgeable, and patient. We started our trek in his village, got to meet his wife and daughter, and set off from there to take in epic terrain and great views of the Himalayas. I would definitely use Ashmita again if I were to return.
