Sikkim Goechala trek difficulties: Key Challenges on this trek
The first thing about any trek in India is that it requires a certain physical fitness and preparedness. However, depending on the difficulty level of different treks, it can be classified whether a hike is meant for beginners or experienced trekkers.
The Goechala trek in Sikkim is certainly physically very demanding as it is a very high-altitude trek. If you are planning to hike to Goechala viewpoint, then pay great attention to your physical and mental fitness, or else you might find this trek very demanding.
One thing to remember is that the challenges you face might differ depending on the season you are trekking in. For instance, the Goechala trek in winter is more strenuous than in spring and autumn seasons.
Below we have listed all the challenges that you might face on the Sikkim Goechala trek.
Long hikes with huge vertical climbs and high-altitude :
On the Goechala trek, you will spend 14 days trekking and traveling. Every day, you will hike 8 to 10 km. The trek starts from Yuksom at 1,780 meters and ascends to Goechala viewpoint at 4,940 meters in 7 days of trekking.
Your body will face constant environmental and climate changes, low air pressure, and long walks. If you are physically and mentally ready, the journey will become extremely difficult.
There are many steep ascents and descents throughout the trail. Likewise, gaining elevation too quickly can also lead to altitude sickness. So, you have to maintain your pace, keep yourself hydrated, and follow preventive measures to avoid altitude sickness.
The tough, steep climbing from Tshoka to Dzongri :
The climb from Tshoka to Dzongri is the most physically challenging segment of the Goechala trek route. It involves around 5 to 7 hours of climbing, covering around 9-10 km.
The trail steeply ascends through dense forests to Phedang. From here, you will ascend above treeline and traverse open ridgelines and yak grazing sites.
The terrain variation includes switchbacks, rough tracks, and muddy/slippery sections. Additionally, high altitude and unpredictable mountain weather also make the hike challenging.
Cold temperature :
With the change in elevation, you will also experience a varying climate. The higher you ascend, the lower the temperature gets. Although exposure to the sun increases with the increase in altitude, cold and wind also increase.
Whether you trek in spring or autumn, the cold climate will be a persistent challenge. So, dressing up properly is very important during the Sikkim Goechala trek.
Early morning hikes :
During the hike from Tshoka to Dzongri viewpoint and Lamuney to Goechala viewpoint, you will begin climbing around 3:00 - 4:00 AM. This early morning hike can be quite challenging for some trekkers.
We hike this early to see a breathtaking sunrise and avoid strong midday winds. We hike early to descend on time to avoid volatile weather at these altitudes.
The mountain views are also crystal clear in early morning hours because the weather remains stable and the sky is usually clear.
Remote wilderness environment :
The Goechala trek route goes through the remotest section of the Himalayas in India. There is pretty much no settlement after Yuksom. We stay at recommended campsites.
Other than you and your group, there will be no one on the trail. You may occasionally come across other trekker groups in peak trekking seasons.
Likewise, there are no medical facilities along the trail, and mobile network coverage is unreliable. The weather changes too quickly, and evacuation is difficult too.
Camping challenges :
Camping in a remote area is quite challenging. First, you have to be self-sufficient. There are no teashops along the way, where you can purchase small things.
We, Ashmita Trek and Tours, provide full camping support, yet camping in remote areas will be basic. You will sleep in alpine tents and use basic toilets.
There will be limited washing opportunities and no luxury comforts. For some people, camping and basic service can be more challenging than the trail itself.
Mental endurance :
As much as the Goechala trek is physically demanding, it is also mentally challenging. Long hikes every day, adjusting to varying climate, basic camping conditions, altitude challenges, terrain, cold mornings, fatigue, and early starts will mentally challenge you, too.
You have to push yourself every day to keep hiking, regardless of the challenges and discomforts. And this is not possible for everyone. You need to be in the right mindset to enjoy the remote Goechala camping trek.
