The Goechal trek route
The Goechala trail is within the Khangchendzonga National Park. It goes through lush rhododendron, magnolia, and orchid jungle and gradually ascends to high river gorges and alpine meadows.
Ultimately, you will traverse rocky, glacial moraines to reach Goechala Viewpoint. The trail ascends and descends through varying altitudes. So, you will experience changing climates and environments.
As altitude increases, the climate will get colder. So, even if you trek in spring or autumn, you need warm clothes and sleeping bags.
From the verdant forests of Yuksom to the stark landscapes of Tshoka, the way up to Goechala Pass is all about challenges and wilderness. There is no teahouse on the Sikkim Goechala trek route, so we spend nights in tents.
This Goechala trek is a camping trip. We provide full board camping service. So, tents, food, fuel, and other camping essentials are included in our package. Trekkers only need to bring their trekking clothes, gear, documents, and personal essentials.
Dzongri is another viewpoint on this trek. From here, you hike through Thangshing and Lamuney to reach Goechala. As the terrain and altitude change, the landscapes and mountain vistas also change.
After the Goechala hike, you will return to Yuksom following the same route. You can check out our Yuksom Dzongri Trek 6 Days package and Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek 11 Dayspackage for more adventure trek options.

Goechala trek difficulty : Major challenges on this trek
The first thing about any trek in India is that it requires a certain physical fitness and preparedness. However, depending on the difficulty level of different treks, it can be classified whether a hike is meant for beginners or experienced trekkers.
The Goechala trek in Sikkim is certainly physically very demanding as it is a very high-altitude trek. If you are planning to hike to Goechala viewpoint, then pay great attention to your physical and mental fitness, or else you might find this trek very demanding.
One thing to remember is that the challenges you face might differ depending on the season you are trekking in. For instance, the Goechala trek in winter is more strenuous than in spring and autumn seasons.
Below we have listed all the challenges that you might face on the Sikkim Goechala trek.
Goechala trek distance, duration, and long hikes :
The Goechala trek distance is approximately 90 kilometers. You will ascend around 7 to 8 kilometers a day. The daily trekking duration is around 5-6 hours a day.
The ascent from Tshoka to Dzongri and Lamuney to Goechala Viewpoint is going to be long, almost 7-8 hours each day.
From Tshoka, you will reach Goechala viewpoint in 7 days of hiking. In those seven days, you will navigate rugged terrain that gets steep and rocky as it gets close to Goechala.
Altitude Considerations :
The trek starts from Yuksom at 1,780 meters and ascends to Goechala viewpoint at 4,940 meters. You will gain 3,160 meters from Yuksom to Goechala.
Your body will face constant environmental and climate changes, low air pressure, and long walks. Gaining elevation too quickly can also lead to altitude sickness.
So, you have to maintain your pace, keep yourself hydrated, and follow preventive measures to avoid altitude sickness.
Cold temperature :
With the change in elevation, you will also experience a varying climate. The higher you ascend, the lower the temperature gets. Although exposure to the sun increases with the increase in altitude, cold and wind also increase.
Whether you trek in spring or autumn, the cold climate will be a persistent challenge. So, dressing up properly is very important during the Sikkim Goechala trek.
Early morning hikes :
During the hike from Tshoka to Dzongri viewpoint and Lamuney to Goechala viewpoint, you will begin climbing around 3:00 - 4:00 AM. This early morning hike can be quite challenging for some trekkers.
We hike this early to see a breathtaking sunrise and avoid strong midday winds. We hike early to descend on time to avoid volatile weather at these altitudes.
The mountain views are also crystal clear in early morning hours because the weather remains stable and the sky is usually clear.

Remote wilderness environment :
The Goechala trek route goes through the remotest section of the Himalayas in India. There is pretty much no settlement after Yuksom. We stay at recommended campsites.
Other than you and your group, there will be no one on the trail. You may occasionally come across other trekker groups in peak trekking seasons.
Likewise, there are no medical facilities along the trail, and mobile network coverage is unreliable. The weather changes too quickly, and evacuation is difficult too.
Camping challenges :
Camping in a remote area is quite challenging. First, you have to be self-sufficient. There are no teashops along the way, where you can purchase small things.
We, Ashmita Trek and Tours, provide full camping support, yet camping in remote areas will be basic. You will sleep in alpine tents and use basic toilets.
There will be limited washing opportunities and no luxury comforts. For some people, camping and basic service can be more challenging than the trail itself.
Mental endurance :
As much as the Goechala trek is physically demanding, it is also mentally challenging. Long hikes every day, adjusting to varying climate, basic camping conditions, altitude challenges, terrain, cold mornings, fatigue, and early starts will mentally challenge you, too.
You have to push yourself every day to keep hiking, regardless of the challenges and discomforts. And this is not possible for everyone. You need to be in the right mindset to enjoy the remote Goechala camping trek.
The toughest sections on the Goechala trek
The hike from Tshoka to Dzongri and Lamuney to Goechala Viewpoint via Sumiti lake are two of the toughest sections of this trek.
Steep climbing from Tshoka to Dzongri :
The trek from Tshoka to Dzongri is one of the most physically challenging segments of the Goechala trek route. It involves around 5 to 7 hours of climbing, covering around 9-10 km. The trail steeply ascends through dense forests to Phedang. From here, you will ascend above treeline and traverse open ridgelines and yak grazing sites.
The terrain variation includes switchbacks, rough tracks, and muddy/slippery sections. Additionally, high altitude and unpredictable mountain weather also make the hike challenging.
Steep ascent from Lamuney to Goechala Viewpoint :
The Lamuney to Goechala viewpoint hike is challenging. You will navigate rocky moraines and steep trails. We begin ascending before dawn, and it takes around 2.5 to 3 hours to ascend and another 2 hours to descend.
First, the trail ascends for around 45 minutes from Lamuney to Samiti Lake. It will be a tough, steep hike to the shores of the Samiti Lake. Then, as you ascend to the Goechala viewpoint, the trail will become steeper and involve climbing on loose rocks. The descent is equally challenging because it will put a lot of pressure on your knees.
Altitude sickness (AMS) and preventive measures
Elevation gain is inevitable on the Goechala trek, and therefore, altitude sickness risk is also present. However, if you gain elevation wisely and follow preventive measures, you can avoid altitude sickness.
Be aware of altitude sickness symptoms. It includes vomiting, nausea, headache, dizziness, trouble sleeping, loss of appetite, and breathlessness.
If you see these symptoms, you have to get first aid from your guide. Similarly, preventive measures include ascending slowly, acclimatization breaks, keeping yourself hydrated, and listening to your body.
Get the right physical preparations
You must have understood by now that the Goechala trek is not an easy trek. It requires good fitness and mental endurance.
*Previous high altitude is also highly recommended because it decreases the risk of altitude sickness, and you will not be completely new to a high altitude environment.
If you are interested in doing the Goechala trek, start by getting your mind and body ready for this trip. Work on your stamina, strength, and endurance.
Start exercising 2 to 4 months before your intended departure date. Be consistent with your workout plan. Intensive cardio exercises with strength training and regular long walks.
Is the Goechala trek difficult for beginner trekkers?
To be honest, the Goechala trek is not a beginner-friendly trek. It is best for trekkers who have previous trek experience and good fitness.
Walking 6 to 7 hours a day, camping in remote locations, a high-altitude, cold environment, bare minimum services, and being away from the hustle and bustle can be too much for beginner trekkers.
At the same time, if you are physically and mentally fit and ready to take on the challenges of the Goechala trek, you may do it as your first trek in India.
It all depends on your preparation, planning, and fitness. We, Ashmita Trek and Tours, will assist you in each step of the journey.
However, you have to put equal effort. So, whether you are a beginner trekker or an experienced hiker, you can do the Goechala trek with us.
