Sikkim Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek (Dzongri–Bikhbari Trek)

The Sikkim Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek, also known as the Dzongri–Bikhbari Trek, is a spectacular alpine adventure that start  in Yuksom, a historic village in West Sikkim. This is a fully camping trek that takes you deep into the pristine landscapes of the Eastern Himalayas. The trek duration is 9 days from Yuksom to Yuksom, with 1–2 additional days for to travel base camp and return journey after the trek, 11 day overall journey.

The trail passes through dense forests rich with oak, chestnut, pine, maple, magnolia, and vibrant rhododendrons. Trekkers experience constantly changing landscapes, including some local villages and monasteries. After approximately three days of trekking, you reach Dzongri (4,400 meters), which offers breathtaking panoramic views of Mount Kanchenjunga and surrounding peaks.

From Yuksoom, the route continues through Sachen, Tshoka, Dzongri, Laxmi Pokhari, and Bikhbari, eventually reaching the HMI Base Camp. This base camp is used by the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute (Darjeeling) for advanced mountaineering training. From here, trekkers can enjoy stunning views of Frey’s Peak (5,830 m), Koktang (6,148 m), Kabru, and the  Rathong Glacier. After spending time at the HMI base camp, back to Bikhbari and Dzongri, descending through Tshoka before concluding back at Yuksom.

During the spring season (March to May), the trail comes alive with blooming rhododendrons in a variety of colours, creating a vibrant and unforgettable trekking experience.

The trek starts at an altitude of approximately 1,780 meters and reaches up to 4,400 meters. It is classified as moderate to difficult due to altitude gain and trekking duration. No technical climbing is required, making it suitable for trekkers with good physical fitness and proper preparation.

Sikkim Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek - 11 Days Itinerary

Arrivel at Bagdogra Airport to NJP Train station trasport to Yksoom base camp of your trek to Dzongri overnight at Home stay.

Our trekking team leader will meet you at your hotel one day before your trek departure. During this meeting, they will provide a comprehensive briefing about your trek and assist with any final preparations.Today marks the beginning of our Sikkim Goechala Trek. Walk gently uphill along the Rathong river gorge, through a lively jungle of magnolia, rhododendron, fern, and several varieties of orchids. Listen to the chirping birds, occasional monkey, and the sound of the wind in the trails – the ultimate feeling of peace. After ascending a bit more, reach Sachen, a Tibetan refugee settlement. Overnight in tent camp.

Take a steep climb after leaving Sachen through vibrant rhododendron forests. The trail is very well-maintained. Take a rest in Phedang, and continue, progressing past the 4,000-meter mark. The lush vegetation gets sparser throughout the day. We set up our camp in Tshoka overnight Camping.

Today is going to be a difficult day. It starts with 30 minutes of steep climb followed by a gradual ascent, after which the trail again climbs steeply for 20 minutes to reach Phedang. 1-hour ascent from here followed by a gentle descent brings you to Dzongri. We set up our camp in Dzongri in the afternoon and, if you have the energy, we continue climbing briefly up to a meadow with crisp views of Koktang, Rathong, Kabru, Kanchenjunga, Simvo, and Pandim. This quick hike helps our bodies prepare for the following days. Overnight in tent camp.

Early risers can get up before dawn to climb to a vantage point on a ridge above the campsite to watch the sunrise on Khangchendzonga, Kabru, Pandim, Rathong, and many other peaks of the Khangchendzonga range. Full day excursion to Laxmi Pokhari. The trial first goes through rhododendron bushes and pasture land for about an hour to Chamaray. From here it is a gradual ascent to Laxmi Pokhari, a big lake cupped in a deep crater. Here you will get good view of Khangchendzonga range, Pandim, Narsing, Kabur, Kabur dome, Koktang etc. If you reach Laxmi Pokhari early and feeling physically fit, an excursion towards Kabur rock will be a rewarding experience. Back to Dzongri. Overnight Camp

The trail first ascends gradually for about half an hour & then descends till we reach a crossroad. The trail on the left goes down to Zamlingang. We follow the trail to the right, which is a flat walk throughout. Overnight Camp

Today’s trek is a gradual ascent to the HMI Base Camp, the site used by the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute of Darjeeling for its mountaineering courses.

From the base camp, you can enjoy stunning views of Frey’s Peak (5,830m), Koktang (6,148m), Kabur, and the Rathong Glacier. After spending some time taking in the scenery, we will return to Bikhbari to set up camp for our overnight stay.

After your breakfast trek to we trek to Dzing which onather aprox 6 hours trek Overnight in Camp.

Today is another special day before you continue your trek to Tshoka. Our trek leader will call all early risers to watch the sunrise over Khangchendzonga, Kabru, Pandim, Rathong, and several other peaks in the Khangchendzonga range. After returning to the campsite for breakfast, we will begin the trek to Tshoka. We will follow the same route back via Deorali and then descend to Phedang. From there, we will continue downhill until we reach our campsite at Tshoka. the 12 km trek will take approximately 5 to 6 hours to complete.

Make the final day of the trek a memorable one! Be present as you hike through the lush landscape. It’s the same route as we took on the first day of the trek, but after many days, it seems fresh. Enjoy any scenery you missed on the first time around. In Yuksam, we check into our hotel and rest or explore the rest of the day. Overnight in hotel. 

After early your breakfast transfer to Bagdogra Airport or NJP train station onward your destination.

Essential Information

What is best seasons for the Sikkim Bigbari Dzongri Trek ? 

In Sikkim Dzongri Bigbari in April and May. Mid September to October end is also a good time for the trek – the views during these months are crystal clear. and Dzongri Goechala Trek also called the Rhododendron trek because of its forests of Magnolia and Rhododendrons in are in full bloom.

Are there any electricity charging points on this trek Is there mobile network on this trek ?

Darjeeling to Yuksoom ,is the last place where you’ll get mobile network. Make sure you finish your important telephone calls before reaching Yuksom and Please  inform family members about poor connectivity on the trek. Yuksom, if at all, might have charging points, provided there is electricity. we suggest you to have spare batteries as well.
